The City Hall AR installation Freedom Constellations represents a monument the the future where young people lead us toward a world that values our collective physical, social, emotional and spiritual freedom and interdependence.
Now on display at the Richmond City Hall in Richmond, VA.
The banners, which can be seen from miles away, include an interactive augmented reality experience that illustrates a world where all youth are free, powered by the 8th Wall platform.
As viewers hold their phones up to the portraits, animations play in the clouds above city hall that visualize the dreams and demands of youth leaders for this beautiful and needed future. The animation illustrates a collective poem co-created by youth organizers from RISE for Youth and Performing Statistics in Richmond, as well as dozens of youth organizers from across the country.
The process of creating an Augmented Reality installation
Outfitted with a GFX 100S camera on loan from Fujifilm, Performing Statistics Creative Director and artist Mark Strandquist collaborated with Ta’Dreama McBride and Clyde Walker, youth leaders in Richmond from RISE for Youth, to create the monumental portraits covering the sides of Richmond City Hall.
Viewers scan the QR code on the signage at 9th Street and Broad Street in front of the John Marshall House to activate the animation.
